Today, I took some time to watch some television on the catch up and I came across a documentary that aired days before called “David Beckham Into The Unknown”, where he and three friends of his travel to Brazil and spend some time in the rain forest.
Now, David Beckham is the most attractive and fashionable footballer in the world. He has that “thing” that Brad Pitt has. He’s gorgeous, but humble and he’s comfortable in his skin. Guys like him would tend to have the ego thing/ douche-baggery thing that every rich guy that can get any girl, any car, any house he wanted, but that isn’t prevalent to him. He knows where he came from and he continues to work with that in mind. Now that he is retired from football, he wants to take things to the next level. With the World Cup games just a few days away (they start on Thursday) and all kinds of attention will be descending on Brazil, which will also be the host country of the Olympics, it’s quite interesting that he is taking this trip with a few buddies on bikes (and a small camera crew) to not only do some male bonding, outside of football, but to really get to know himself. To think, the world’s most recognizable man will literally go somewhere where no one recognizes him, is bliss because he can just be David Beckham The Man. There is a part where he is on the beginning leg of the trip and he has rode out on his bike with his mates to a rest stop, where they stop for some food and beer (yes, David Beckham drinks beer!!!!!!) and the locals there think he’s a rock star because he’s covered in tattoos and riding a motorcycle. His mates talk up the locals, as best as they could to see if any of them recognize him and they didn’t have a clue. David’s face lit up like a Christmas tree, because for once he is somewhere where no one knows who he is, or even cares. He enjoys that he is able to be left alone and be David Beckham The Man, and not David Beckham The Brand.
At one point, David learns to catch fish, and continues to ride on his bike. They have to get them off of a boat and have to take the bike onto muddy terrain. The bike chain on David’s bike breaks and he is utterly thrilled. Covered in mud and dust, he is like a little boy in a candy store. Even out there he was still recognized; he autographs a fan’s jersey.
David is completely out of his comfort zone and it shows on his face. They start a fire and have some whiskey, cook some food, eat and settle in for the night. Even there, football becomes the topic of conversation, but stripped to its bare essentials and it’s fun for him. It’s the simple life that he craves sometimes.
When they stop in the next town, he is recognized yet again (more cell phone pictures and autographs on jerseys and tshirts). At this point, even I want his autograph on my arm (to be turned into a tattoo later). They ride on through the rain and there is a bit of an accident. His American friend fell off his bike and skidded for a bit, but he wasn’t hurt. The bike was scratched and now out of commission, but they make their plane to the furthest point of the Brazilian rainforest to meet the tribe that they will stay with. Once there, although slightly nervous, the tribe welcomes them with open arms and the children were fascinated by all of David’s tattoos, where they were trying to rub them off (He’s painted!!! He’s hairy!!!).
Football comes up again as he is chatting with the elders, explaining what he does. He’s never explained football to anyone, except Victoria and he did a great job of it. I know more about it now…lol.
They help them work for a bit and then they say goodbye. The four men bonded more, met some amazing people and learned so much about themselves. David does have some trust issues, especially because of who he is, but it’s the nature of the beast that is being David Beckham The Brand. I loved this documentary, because you got to know a little more about David Beckham The Man.
You know I can’t just do this without talking about the fashion. David and his mates were totally rocking the Belstaff leather jackets (he did do their most recent campaign. Ewan MacGregor did it previously), as well as the world staple of jeans, tshirts, bandannas, all worn how it should be worn and totally full of life. Even covered in mud, dust, dirt and unshowered, all of them cut a fine figure. Check it out and let me know what you think!!!!!!
